Interview with Piotr Krępeć and Kris Górski

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

Kris: I started with classical piano and then went on to write and produce pop and film music. Being around a lot of acoustic music has left me with a definite preference for those kinds of arrangements. I tend to always prefer real instruments over sampled ones. My studio AudioPlanet was built around that need. We have a lot of acoustic keyboard instruments available.

Piotr: From an early age I was surrounded by a variety of music, mainly thanks to my parents who had diverse musical tastes. The house was always full of sounds of various genres, from classical to jazz, which certainly influenced my musical path. At home, I was never forced to learn to play an instrument, on the contrary, I preferred spending time with friends playing children’s games. Back then, an hour of exercise before the lesson was enough. The situation changed when I was already a teenager. The music would absorb me for hours. I was mainly occupied with classical music. I liked it very much.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Peter Krepec & Kris Gorski”?

Piotr: Thank you for this question. It’s difficult for me. Because I have always been focused only on music. The creative process occupied all of my attention (and, in fact, it still does). I grew up in an era where the ethos of an artist was to create CD albums. I have become very immersed in it and now in the times of Spotify, playlists, singles, reels, Insta and Tiktok, it is difficult for me to find my place. Of course, I understand how the world works today, or at least I try to keep up with understanding. However, daily Insta rolls are not my way.

Therefore, for those who are just discovering “Piotr Krępeć and Kris Górski”, answering the second part of the question, I would like to say that our music is not only sounds, but above all emotions, being “here and now”, a journey through various aspects of our experience . So listen to this album in its entirety from start to finish, it’s very important. Only then will you have a chance to understand the meaning of this album. I hope this music will be a source of inspiration, reflection and beauty for you. Thank you for being here 🙂

Kris: We invite the listeners to a world of improvised music that opens up doors to fragility and intimacy that we hope this music conveys. We’ve started working with professionals in PR to help our music reach a broader audience. We are also planning a series of concerts.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

Kris: I don’t listen that much to other music, but composers like Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm and Hans Zimmer, as well as many pop rock artists had a lot of impact on me over the years.

Piotr: I’m sorry to say it again, but I don’t need inspiration anywhere else than in music itself. Music is inspiring enough for me. When we play together with Kris, there is enough inspiration in our sounds, and sometimes even too much of it. All you have to do is listen! The music is so rich that it doesn’t need any additional inspiration. For me, the most inspiring artists I knew were painters Tadeusz Pfeiffer and Andrzej Cisowski. These two artists taught me a lot about music. In this sense, the work of my wife Malwina is fascinating to me. Her painting always accompanies me (when I play).:)

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the album, “Impromptu Session 1.”?

Piotr: In recent years, my artistic path has clearly changed its course. After many years of playing finger style, I finally found an amazing, extraordinary, powerful creative force that became my obsession :). I trust its implicitly now, feeling that I found what I’ve been looking for for many years. This album was created that way. We immersed ourselves in the sounds with Kris and this album was born.

Kris: We sat down to a recording of what ended up being a 6 hour long improvised session. Our main intention was to come with an open mind and let ourselves explore those areas of music that were new to us. Out of that came all the tracks on the album, with no editing or re-recording.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

Kris: Organic

Piotr: Gently

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording the album?

Piotr: For me, the process of creating music itself is a challenge. But when everything goes well, then playing is very easy. It doesn’t require any effort. The music plays itself. The sounds are arranged as they should. Let me draw your attention to one thing. The challenge may be to maintain this state for a long time. A recording session such as the one for Impromptu Session 1 lasted several hours, so there were certainly moments when this powerful mental concentration was lacking.

Kris: I enjoyed the process of recording immensely. It took us 4 days to choose from the material we recorded, and all in all it wasn’t that long. However, playing the first concert was quite a challenge for me, as the whole album is improvised, with unobvious structures.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

Kris: I guess we will continue working on getting the album to a wider audience and plan our concerts. Impromptu Sessions started out as a very spontaneous idea, and it will probably evolve as we continue working on it. Piotr and I already have plans for next projects.

Piotr: My goal is to bring beauty to the world. I listen and play. I don’t think about whether anyone likes this music or how to sell it. Such questions have always been completely unimportant to me as an artist. When I create, I try not to disturb the message that comes to me. My goal is to reach the sources of creativity and be in this state. Being in a state where you touch the “secret of creativity” is something absolutely fascinating for me. It has taken me my entire life to find my way to this “place”, “point” or “state” if you will, and I think this is what best reflects the message of my work. This question requires a more extensive answer, and I hope that I will eventually be able to complete a longer work that completely covers this topic.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

Piotr: To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had the urge to work with a dream artist. Artists whose work I really appreciate and like always seem to me to be complete, ready, and I don’t feel the need to get involved in their work. Kris and I have been friends for years, and I think that’s where this album came from. One day we spontaneously started playing together, and it turned out that beautiful things were happening. This is the best collaboration I could imagine:)

Kris: I wanted to record with Piotr ever since he recorded his first album in my studio a few years back. Now that this particular dream has been fulfilled, I am yet to decide on the next one :D.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

Kris: Spending time with the instrument, recording oneself, playing to any audience (starting with oneself and family) is always a good thing. Understanding how the present day music market is evolving is important, as it has undergone some fundamental changes from the time I was starting out. Despite this huge amount of music being published online these days, I still have a feeling that if the music is authentic and good, and one puts in the effort into spreading the word around them, creating their own musical tribe, their efforts will be rewarded. Relationships are a vital part of growing one’s network.

Piotr: My advice is this. If you want to make money from music, you better go to some good business studies or learn foreign languages instead of wasting your time on music. This will be to the benefit of everyone. If you dream of being a big music star, you’d better do something else. It’s a waste of your time. It won’t work like that… If you really want to pursue music, look for a place for yourself in it. Get to know yourself well to know which direction to go. Once you find your way, be patient. Be creative and don’t expect great results right away. Be honest with yourself, stay true to the inspiration you have. Don’t trust anyone who would force you to create differently than you want. And the most important thing is to have fun with art. Just have fun with what you create.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

Piotr: Take care of your health, yourself, your loved ones and friends. Go to the dentist twice a year. Buy a pack of 100 bitcoins when they were worth $1. 🙂

Kris: Relax and enjoy the ride 🙂

LISTEN TO THE ARTISTS:

Read the full interview. “Genuine art often gets lost in the tangle of the industrial machine”

Piotr Krępeć and Kris Górski are two Polish artists who recently produced one of the most breathtakingly beautiful albums I have ever heard. Titled ‘Impromptu Session 1’, it’s a soothing and meditative collection of instrumental songs that simply have to be heard to be fully appreciated.

I couldn’t quite believe my luck when Piotr and Kris agreed to an interview, as I had so many questions to put to them! Going in-depth about the arduous process of selecting “only” sixteen tracks for the record, what their thoughts are on the current state of the music industry, and the upcoming challenge of performing live, please give a big welcome to our new friends Piotr and Kris!

Hi Piotr and Kris! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us! Firstly, congratulations on ‘Impromptu Session 1’, it is a true work of art. How do you hope listeners will connect with or interpret the album?

Kris: Hi Jeremy 🙂 The intention behind this album was to experience music as it came to us. Without any preparation. We recorded a 6-hour-long session of improvisation, from which came all the songs present on the album. We were looking for space between the notes. I hope the listeners will feel that and find for themselves inner worlds to explore.

Piotr: Thank you for the kind words about ‘Impromptu Session 1’. We hope that listeners will find a deep connection with the music in these improvisations and discover their own personal feelings while listening to the album.

‘Myst and light’ is hands down one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. What does it mean to both of you and do you remember its “birth” so to speak?

Piotr: Thank you 🙂 As we mentioned, all of the music was recorded in one single session so the conception and birth were all tied into one process. The recording was an intense journey that we felt was somehow spiritual. There were many more songs than those that ended up on the album. It took 4 days to listen through everything. We made a list of the best ones, which was perhaps 25/30 pieces. We sat down and listened to all, noting our feelings and if any belonged together. The final choice and order came about quite naturally and ‘Myst and light’ seemed to want to open this music dance 🙂

Kris, I read that you own and run a recording studio called AudioPlanet in Kashubia and just from a quick Google search, it’s a region that looks incredibly beautiful! What sort of role does this play in the music that gets created there?

Kris: As you mentioned, the surroundings of our place are quite lovely. AudioPlanet is a residential studio and can accommodate up to 12 guests. Those who choose to record here usually come to experience nature as well. There are many instances where artists will take a break in the session to go for a walk or take a dip in the lake. It’s a wonderful place to be living in!

Who and what inspires each of you?

Kris: My musical journey started a long time ago with classical music and piano lessons from the age of 7, so I listened to mostly dead composers haha. Then came artists like Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Michael Jackson. There was also jazz and blues/boogie era, grunge and Britpop. Nowadays, I prefer the softer music of Arvo Part, Olafur Arnalds, Joep Beving, and film music from Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore and others. Joni Mitchel’s ‘Both Sides Now’ is my favorite song of all time. Being in the music business, however, means I rarely if ever get to listen to music outside of work.

Piotr: Similarly to Kris, my musical journey began with classical music. However, that formula was very limiting for me. Later, years of inspiration with jazz music followed. Today, what inspires me the most is silence. I listen to very little music, or sometimes not at all. I appreciate minimalism, therefore, I won’t list the names of my favorite artists here. When I sit down with my instrument, my only inspiration is the sounds that currently come to me. I engage with them in a kind of dialogue. I never seek inspiration beyond that space. When playing together with Kris, he becomes my inspiration, and what happens musically between us. There is no better inspiration for me than the encounter of souls in the act of creation.

What are your thoughts regarding the music industry of today? And, if you were able to, what changes would you make to it?

Kris: Now that is a deep topic and I don’t know how much time we have haha. It’s a very stratified field with the top 3% making most of the money. There are a few areas that I feel should be worked on in conjunction. Many young upcoming artists have great music, but little financial means or knowledge on how to produce it. Producing them is one sure way to help them in the process and I would see production projects being treated like startups, where one or more people take stakes in financing.

Last year I produced two artists, one of whom is Cooper Lower from Australia, and the other a local Kashubian punk band called Transmisja z Kieszeni. However, that is the easiest part. What comes after is more challenging and this is where I see potential in platforms like Musosoup, Submithub and others. It’s the creation and sustaining of each artist’s individual tribe of fans that takes the most time and energy. It’s a complex world with many artists but it’s governed by very simple human emotions. Once those are understood a working model can be arrived at.

Piotr: I believe that today’s music industry is primarily a marketing mess, where talent often takes a back seat to the image of the artist. People are inundated with mediocre productions whose sole purpose is quick commercial success, even at the expense of quality and originality. I would prefer music to return to its roots, to true authenticity, rather than following trends dictated by major record labels, fashion, and who knows what else. Nowadays, we are saturated with artificially generated content that has lost its soul! Genuine art often gets lost in the tangle of the industrial machine. I am an advocate for a revolution to restore music to its original meaning.

Could you tell us a bit about your songwriting process? Not specifically for any song but just in general. How do you take an idea and turn it into a piece of music?

Piotr: The process of creation is truly like a mystery. A secret that is challenging to express in words. It’s something that transcends the boundaries of our human understanding. It’s an elusive connection with creativity, something that must be felt. It’s not just a skill but a gift that flows from the depths of the soul. During the act of creation, I enter a kind of trance, where sounds arrange themselves as if they have their own life. It’s precisely this elusive magic of the creative process that makes music become something more than just sound. It’s an encounter with the unknown, something that isn’t always possible to narrate with words but can only be felt in the heart of each sound.

Kris: It’s similar in my case. I never really set out with an idea. When scoring movies, music just “pops” into my head mostly. I compose mostly at my piano or grand piano. I record all the ideas and then work from there. Arranging and producing a track is much more time-consuming than writing it, for me.

If you were each allowed to collaborate with one musician or band, who would you choose?

Kris: That is a tough question. Piotr was definitely one artist I very much wanted to work with and now that is done, I feel like a chapter has been closed while the next one is already being written 😀

Piotr: Throughout my life, I’ve essentially been a solo artist. I rarely collaborate with anyone, and this album with Kris is an exception.

Thanks so much again for chatting with us you two! Before we let you go, what comes next for the project?

Kris: We are getting ready to play some concerts which, given the nature of our improvised album, is a bit of a challenge to prepare 😀

Piotr: It would be truly wonderful to perform a few concerts together. As Kris mentioned, it comes with some challenges, but I hope everything is possible!

Read the full article here:
https://www.mesmerized.io/piotr-krepec-and-kris-gorski-genuine-art-often-gets-lost-in-the-tangle-of-the-industrial-machine/

"Simple" reaches for achievements in the field of concrete music. This is a simple live recording in a backyard garden. You can hear the surroundings in the recording. The recording consists of 6 impromptu tracks. It's meditation music. A simple record of the moment. Tuned 432 hz

The sheet music are coming

I'm catching up from years ago. Notes for songs from the album "In Substance" are almost ready. Sheet music for the album "Movement in Silence" is ready. They're coming to you by the end of the year.

The sheet music for "Movement in Silence" will require one explanation.

I use the flat nashville tuning on the baritone guitar. The relative intervallic relationship of the strings is the same as a conventional guitar tuned down a fifth. Howewer, as in “Nashville” tuning the 3rd and 4rd strings are restung and tuned an octave higher than usual.

Even thoughthe songs were recorded on the baritone guitar, these transcriptions will work great when played on standard 6- string guitar. In fact all of the note, tab, are written relative to a standard tuned guitar to facilitate the ease of reading. For exemple, even thought the open 1string sounds as an A, it is writen as an E. The notes writen on the 3 and 4 strings are also written on the staff in their the normal octave, but will sound an octave higher than written when tuned to Nashville tuning.

It is possible to restring a standard guitar with baritone guitar strings and detune to the pitches listen above. You will need to install lighter gauge strings in place of the 3 and 4 strings of the baritone set. Since the highest pitched open string in Nashville tuning is actually the 3 string (a minor third above the open 1 string), you'll want to select a string gauge that's a bit thinner than the 1 string. The open 4 string will sound a whole step lower than the open 1 string, so the gauge of this string should be similar to the diameter of the first string.

Search sheet music here: Tabs

Love, Peter

My way of meditation

Something about my way of meditation.

Much has been written about spirituality. I would like to talk about the meditation that my music led me to.

When I was a kid I used to play guitar because I just liked it. It was fun. It was just played for fun.
After many years, I realized that music had a different function in my life. It’s not about entertainment anymore. It’s not about having fun. After all, playing guitar is still a place for me to have fun. But the main difference is that the music I play puts me in a meditative state. It brings the mind into a state of meditation.

This state is timeless. There is no “ego”. It is continuing at the present time. After many years, playing the guitar led me to this state. I call it my meditation path.

Of course, it is very difficult to describe it all in words. Nevertheless – on this page I will try to talk about it a bit. I discuss this topic in detail in my book, which I hope will be communicatively translated into English.

Anyway. My way to meditation is through music. I will not talk about meditation in any other context than in the context of my guitar playing.

The story of one recording

“MOVEMENT IN SILENCE.”

It is an album that is very important to me. First of all, because it is a departure from the fingerstyle convention. At least in my understanding.
Second, because it is opposed to the modern model of music production.

But from the beginning.

The album is one coherent musical story. It consists of 10 songs but it is like one long song. That is why you should listen to this album as a whole, from beginning to end.

This music is my meditation. This is my tribute to simplicity. There is a lot of essence here. Little form but a lot of content.

This album was made over the course of several years. When I say that it was created over a period of several years, I mean that the way of playing was created for several years.

The recording of the album itself took only a moment. There was only one track. I sat down, played it from start to finish once and it was done. In production, nothing was added or improved. This album is unedited. That’s what I wanted. It was important to me. This is honest and 100% true footage of the moment. This is my opposition to modern production. Today it’s not recorded like that anymore. Today, music is produced like any other product. That’s why music is dead. It has no inner life. It is often over-intellectualized.

I am convinced that by listening to the album “Movement in Silence” from the beginning to the end, the listener will be able to feel this music as much as I did when it was created.

Anyway. Enjoy listening! Listen or download “Movement in Silence” here

REVIEW ABOUT THIS ALBUM:

“Piotr’s music instantly puts you in a state where you forget about everyday life. A lot of space and breath, as well as the full and natural sound of the guitar make you listen absolutely. These experiences accompanied me throughout the entire work on the album and I hope that they will also be your / your participation / the participation of all listeners “ – MAGDALENA PIOTROWSKA | HEAR CANDY MASTERING

“Piotr Krępeć is an Artist with a capital A. His sensitivity, artistry and dedication to this demanding Muse are enormous. Piotr is the key-keeper, and his music opens a hitherto unknown door through which, like Alice, we discover the richness of our souls. Its notes charm, seduce, lead you to where the Great Water ends “- KRIS GÓRSKI | AUDIOPLANET STUDIO

The power of creativity

The long-awaited book “The Power of Creativity” will be available soon. It will cover topics related to creativity. It covers such issues as: the state of mind and its key importance in creativity, silence as a medium of presence, source of creativity – what is it and how to get to it?

I have been writing this book for many years. I have been gathering experience to write it over the years. It seems to me that I am slowly ready to share what music has taught me.

Can’t wait…

Here are some short excerpts, some thoughts taken out of context:

“Thinks…

… When you think while playing, you don’t really play, you just think you are playing. You really play when you are not thinking. You only play when you get out of your own mind. Then you will be open to music and – importantly – you will be free from assessments and analyzes. When you are free from mind terror while playing, errors do not exist. It is impossible to go wrong. The music plays itself …

… Therefore, the forces of creation cannot be provoked purely intentionally …

… It’s all about listening more than playing. Playing is listening, not playing. As you listen, you bring out the music from the depths to give it the form of sounds. You don’t force the guitar to play what you want, but you let the guitar play. It’s the guitar that guides you, not you the guitar. Perhaps it would be better to say that the music guides you, not you the music. The opposite of what you may have thought so far.”…
